It is Friday night and time for another beer tasting! This week, Danielle and I take a trip to the East Coast for Maine’s “Allagash Brewing Company”!
We’ve been a huge fan of their beers for a long time and cannot wait to get this tasting in the books!
So, go pop open your favorite alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink, kick back, and go with us while we taste beers from Allagash Brewing Company!
Our first beer is…
BEER: River Trip (Belgian-style Session Ale)
ABV: 4.8%
MATT: 3.5/5 (downgrade from recording)
DANIELLE: 3.5/5
LOOK: Gold and hazy
SCENT: Some citrus, coriander, ginger
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Slightly thick mouthfeel. Very refreshing beer with some bitterness and spice. Sugar cane in there as well.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: I like the consistency of the beer and the slight sweetness mixed with spice. I don’t like how otherwise tasteless it is. It cannot decide whether it’s a Belgian or an Ale and that just doesn’t work right here.
BEER: White (Belgian-style Wheat Beer)
ABV: 5.2%
MATT: 5/5
DANIELLE: 4.75/5
LOOK: Gold and hazy
SCENT: Wheat, coriander, spice
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Thick mouthfeel. Citrus on the back end with coriander, wheat, and spices on the front. Very crisp.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: This beer is just an all-timer.
BEER: North Sky Stout
ABV: 7.5%
MATT: 5/5
DANIELLE: 4.75/5
LOOK: Dark with a half inch head
SCENT: Chocolate, coffee…and cola?
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Thinner than most stouts. Very coffee-forward with a lot of cola in there as well to balance it out.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: I think this is a decent stout. We’ve both had better. A bit too bitter and dark for our taste. Could have used some more sweet or citrus or something.
BEER: Tripel (Belgian Style Golden Ale)
ABV: 9%
MATT: 3.5/5
DANIELLE: 3.75/5
LOOK: Clear gold with some haze
SCENT: Sweet peach and fruit
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Thin as an ale should be but almost tasteless with a hint of fruit and saccharin.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: It’s a decent beer, one that should be crushable — except you can actually taste and feel the alcohol in it. I have had far better ales and so has my wife.
BEER: Barrel & Bean (Bourbon Barrel-Aged Golden Stout)
ABV: 9.6%
MATT: 4/5
DANIELLE: 4.25/5
LOOK: Gold with some haze
SCENT: Dark coffee
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Coffee and bourbon with a thicker than normal mouthfeel.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: An excellent winter ale. This would go great with a Christmas or Thanksgiving get-together. Outstanding. The coffee flavor is nicely off-set by the bourbon booze taste. A little smoky as well and you can definitely taste the alcohol.
All in all, a solid tasting…hear our final thoughts here:
NEXT WEEK: To be announced…
