It’s Friday and it’s time to relax with some drinks! This week, my wife and I taste four flavors from El Segundo Brewing Company in El Segundo, California!
So, please, go get your favorite beverage, sit down, kick back and enjoy as we do our tasting!
Our first beer is…
BEER: Casa Azul Lager Obscura
ABV: 4.6%
MATT: 4/5
DANIELLE: 4/5
LOOK: Copper and clear
SCENT: Wheat, tree fruit, corn
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Slighty thick mouthfeel with sweet fruit and wheat on the tongue and a hoppy, slightly spicy finish.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: A good start to the tasting. Weird that El Segundo includes the word “Lager” here. It doesn’t really come across as such and is more of a Red Ale with the sweetness and slight spice. Very refreshing and we liked this one very much.
BEER: Steve Austin’s Broken Skull IPA
ABV: 6.7%
MATT: 4/5
DANIELLE: 4/5
LOOK: Gold and clear
SCENT: Citrus and hops
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Crisp and refreshing with grapefruit and very slight fruit notes with a nice hoppy and dry finish.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: Admit it. You’ve wondered what Austin was tasting when he poured the beers into his mouth after stunning some sorry SOB on Monday Night RAW. Well now you can! This isn’t a special IPA by any means but I love the overall flavor of this beer. It’s not fruity and it’s not aggressive and the nice hoppiness at the tail end is a nice reminder that this is an old school style beer brewed with love.
BEER: Mayberry IPA
ABV: 7.2%
MATT: 4.5/5 (changed from recording)
DANIELLE: 3.75/5
LOOK: Gold and clear
SCENT: Citrus and tropical fruit
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Nice, crisp West Coast style IPA reminiscent of flavors like Dust Bowl Brewing’s Tomorrow’s Clear and Paperback Brewing’s Tucked in By Strangers. Fruit and crisp, bitter hops make for a great mixture.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: Danielle didn’t like this as much as I did which is all well and good but I assure you this is a great IPA with a lot of character and flavor to it. Tropical fruit dominates the main pallet while bitter hops offset that nicely. This is a good West Coast style IPA with heart.
BEER: Blurred Lines Hybrid IPA
ABV: 7.2%
MATT: 4.5/5
DANIELLE: 4.5/5
LOOK: Gold and very hazy
SCENT: Tropical fruit all day
MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: A great mixture of what we just had in Mayberry with an extremely juicy hazy IPA. Tropical fruit notes all over the place and bitter hops on the back end. Cream is present as well.
FINAL REFLECTIONS: Another outstanding offering from El Segundo, a hybrid of Eastern America meets Western America with two very distinct styles of IPA. The bitter hops of the West offset the juiciness of the East. This was a revelation of flavor and execution. Almost TOO good.
FINAL THOUGHTS: This was one of the best beer tastings we have ever had with nearly every beer agreed at a “4” or better. This was like a four-course tasting menu of awesomeness and we look forward to more great things from El Segundo Brewing Company in the future.
