San Jose Breweries – Beer Tasting

san jose breweries

It’s Friday night and we’re on the third week of October. We are saving our Pumpkin Ales for the last week of the month — so, tonight, we are visiting two local San Jose breweries and tasting their beers!

We have two beers each from Strike Brewing Company and Hermitage Brewing Company!

So, go pour yourself your favorite beverage, come back to your couch, sit down, put your feet up on the table, and join us for our San Jose Breweries tasting!

Our first beer is…

san jose breweries

BEER: Two Seam IPA
BREWERY: Strike Brewing Co. – San Jose, CA
ABV: 6.5%
MATT: 4/5
DANIELLE: 4/5

LOOK: Gold and slightly hazy

SCENT: Citrus and pine

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Slightly thick mouthfeel. Refreshing, lots of citrus and very juicy orange. Offset by dry hops and pine.

FINAL REFLECTIONS: Danielle believes that this is an easygoing IPA that’s “crushable”. I don’t necessarily agree. I think you have to be at a 4 or 5 ABV to be crushable. In any case, very nice IPA with a lot of flavor. Not too aggressive. It’s very dry going down. All in all, nicely balanced IPA.

BEER: Trainwreck West Coast IPA
BREWERY: Hermitage Brewing Company – San Jose, CA
ABV: 7.7%
MATT: 3.75/5
DANIELLE: 3.5/5

LOOK: Darker gold with some haze

SCENT: Orange with some summer floral and honey

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Slightly thick mouthfeel. A little hint of citrus rind but the honey flavor just rolls right over it. It’s offset by some pretty bitter hops.

FINAL REFLECTIONS: A good beer but it’s almost too sweet and too bitter and there isn’t enough of an in-between tartness like orange or lemon to offset it. Very honey forward with bitter hops on the back end. Decent IPA (and interesting) but we’ve both had better.

BEER: Clean Spin Triple IPA
BREWERY: Hermitage Brewing Company – San Jose, CA
ABV: 9.2%
MATT: 4/5 (changed from the recording)
DANIELLE: 3.5/5

LOOK: Gold with some haze

SCENT: Hoppy with some honey and citrus rind

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Slightly thick mouthfeel. Very sweet, almost milkshake texture. Very sweet and not too bitter.

FINAL REFLECTIONS: Very much the opposite of the last beer. Very sweet, almost dessert-like. Has a bit of a milkshake aftertaste that gets better as it goes down. The bitterness from the hops isn’t as pronounced as the last beer. A very good Triple IPA.

BEER: Triple Play Triple IPA
BREWERY: Strike Brewing Co. – San Jose, CA
ABV: 10%
MATT: 4/5 (changed from the recording)
DANIELLE: 4.25/5

LOOK: Gold with some haze

SCENT: Very hoppy with some honey, sandalwood, slight cinnamon, slight caramel

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Slightly thick mouthfeel. Very sweet, almost milkshake texture. Very sweet and not too bitter.

FINAL REFLECTIONS: Very much the opposite of the last beer. Very sweet, almost dessert-like. Has a bit of a milkshake aftertaste that gets better as it goes down. The bitterness from the hops isn’t as pronounced as the last beer. A very good Triple IPA.

FINAL REFLECTIONS: Unfortunately, we accidentally lost our audio version of the final reflections this week…but we can say that this week’s tasting was amazing. We really liked what both San Jose breweries had to offer us!

NEXT WEEK: We do a 6-course Halloween beer tasting! Join us!
