The 5 Days of Cinco De Mayo: Beer Tasting! – Night 3

Cinco de mayo

Welcome to the third night of our Cinco de Mayo tasting! For the next five nights, we will be tasting 25 different Lager beers from around the United States and the rest of the world, doing five beers a night!

So, please, go get your favorite beverage, sit down, kick back and enjoy as we do our tasting!

Our first beer is…

Cinco de mayo

BEER: Limelight (Lager w/ Lime & Salt)
BREWERY: Epidemic Ales – Concord, CA
ABV: 4.5%
MATT: 3/5
DANIELLE: 3/5

LOOK: Crystal clear and light gold

SCENT: Lime and salt, as you’d expect

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Lime and hops

FINAL REFLECTIONS: At this point, we’re convinced that if you’ve had one of these lime lager things, you’ve had them all. This isn’t a bad one, it’s just not great. The lime flavor tastes artificial at first, then tastes more real the more you get down the glass — but it’s almost acidic to the point of being undrinkable. Still, it’s crisp and refreshing.

Cinco de mayo

BEER: Einstôk (Icelandic Arctic Lager)
BREWERY: Einstöck Ölgerð – Arkureyri, Iceland
ABV: 4.7%
MATT: 3/5
DANIELLE: 3/5

LOOK: Crystal clear and light gold

SCENT: Hops, citrus peel

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Bitter hops and a bit of grapefruit

FINAL REFLECTIONS: This is a weird Lager. It doesn’t come off as one. It tastes more like an entry-level IPA with the bitter hops, slight pine and grapefruit. The good news is that the taste gets better the more you get into the glass — but it’s also off-putting because you aren’t expecting the aggressiveness. Still, it’s a decent beer.

BEER: Tremor California Light Lager
BREWERY: Seismic Brewing Company – Santa Rosa, CA
ABV: 4.2%
MATT: 3.5/5
DANIELLE: 3.25/5

LOOK: Crystal clear and pale gold

SCENT: Citrus, pine, honey, wheat

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Clean and refreshing with a hint of citrus

FINAL REFLECTIONS: The scent promises a deeper, more complex beer than it actually is on the tongue. You’re missing that sweetness, but you do get the citrus and pine elements which come across nicely and don’t overpower the beer to the point of being aggressive. This is a nice, light, and refreshing beer.

BEER: Taco Truck Lime Lager
BREWERY: Dust Bowl Brewing Company – Turlock, CA
ABV: 4.7%
MATT: 3.5/5
DANIELLE: 3/5

LOOK: Crystal clear and gold

SCENT: Lime all day

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Lime and wheat

FINAL REFLECTIONS: Here we are with another lime lager. It’s decent and about what you’d expect from the whole “lime lager” scene. In my opinion, it’s better than Limelight by Epidemic Ales — though my wife doesn’t think so and says the aftertaste sinks it. It’s more “whole” than most lagers of its kind, with a deeper wheat flavoring and a little bit of honey sweetness to boot.

BEER: SF Lager
BREWERY: Local Brewing Company – San Francisco, CA
ABV: 5.1%
MATT: 4/5
DANIELLE: 3/5

LOOK: Crystal clear and pale gold

SCENT: Wheat, honey, blossoms

MOUTHFEEL/TASTE: Slightly thick mouthfeel with a nice deep wheat flavoring, slight citrus, and honey sweetness on the back end.

FINAL REFLECTIONS: This was a nice surprise. This is a crisp, refreshing lager which promises you a good flavor profile on the nose and delivers it nicely. Unpretentious, with a good amount of wheat and citrus and a floral/honey sweetness on the finish. Nice Lager.

FINAL THOUGHTS: This was another nice night with some good beers that were all in the “3” range, buoyed somewhat by Local Brewing Company’s “SF Lager”, which finished the night nicely.
